When I was 15, my martial arts instructor took advantage of me. He used my eagerness, respect, and trust against me. He made my skin crawl when he should have made me feel safe. He violated me. I hardened the tenderest parts of myself. I lost faith in my community, and I repressed my attraction to men. Thankfully, I have reclaimed my masculinity and queerness. I have found love – love untainted by assault. And, one day at a time, the ghosts of my past loosen their grip on me.

In 2019, I finally came forward. I wrote and directed a PSA on my experience, entitled Strength Speaks Up, for Teen Vogue's award-winning wellness section.
